Here at Right Path Counseling, we frequently, and almost exclusively, see patients in person at our Jericho office. We do this because our therapists frequently find that they prefer in-person treatment, and we find that there are benefits to seeing someone in an office, particularly for conditions where individuals need public experiences, such as with social anxiety or depression.
That said, many of our therapists offer remote therapy to patients that need it, not only on Long Island, but also throughout New York State. We offer this type of remote therapy not only so that our therapists can reach patients *anywhere* in New York, but also because we know that TeleHealth and remote therapy is not only good for business – it is also a form of accessibility.
Post-Covid Health
One of the most common reasons to offer remote therapy is that not everyone can safely do in person therapy. Those that are immunocompromised, for example, may not be able to see a therapist in person. Those that have physical limitations may find it immensely challenging to come to an office. Those without cars, or who are not able to travel, also need to be able to access a therapist.
In this sense, remote therapy is a way to offer accessibility, which is important for us here at Right Path Counseling.
Mental Health Limitations
Imagine a person has depression, and is finding it difficult to get the motivation they need to leave their home. On the one hand, in person therapy is advantageous – getting out of the house is a way to help people overcome some of their challenges.
But what if that person doesn’t feel able to leave their home?
They still deserve to see a therapist, and through therapy, we can work together to try to help them overcome whatever may be holding them back in order to eventually attend in-person treatments should they be beneficial.
Time in a Busy Remote World
Therapy often takes place during business hours, and while we do offer night and weekends in select situations (depending on therapist availability), most of our patients see us during the day.
We live in busy times, where not everyone can take the time to not only see a therapist, but also travel to them. Similarly, many people work remote now, and remote workers are typically expected to always be home and in front of their computer during business hours. They may be able to block off an hour, but blocking off two hours to drive to an office, see a therapist, and drive back can be difficult.
Remote therapy helps make sure that therapists are still accessibility in these situations as well.
Preference and Therapist Recommendations
Lastly, while in-person therapy can be highly beneficial and is the type of therapy most commonly requested, that doesn’t mean it’s for everyone. There are situations where you or your therapist may prefer or even recommend remote therapy, depending on what is going on in your home life, your mental health, your marriage, and more.
All of these are examples of situations where, even if you’re located nearby, you may still find remote therapy to be preferential. Remote therapy also opens the door for patients from any corner of New York, especially if they’re located in remote areas where access to a therapist may be difficult.
