    What Are Panic Attacks?

Anxiety is a mental health issue. But it can also be very physical. Anxiety can cause an increased heartbeat, shaking, sweating, and many other physical responses that we often associate with fear.

Some people experience intensely physical events – events so intense, that they are often mistaken medical episodes. These are called “panic attacks.” Panic attacks have symptoms that resemble heart attacks, including:

    • Chest Pain
    • Rapid Heartbeat
    • Trouble Breathing
    • Lightheadedness
    • Sweating
    • Intense Feelings of Fear or Doom
    • Weaknesses and Tingling

Symptoms tend to begin small and typically get stronger over time, peaking after about 10 minutes before beginning a slow decline.

Panic attacks are often triggered during periods of intense stress, but it is also possible to have a panic attack for no clear reason at all. The symptoms of a panic attack can often feel so severe, that it may not always be clear that it is a panic attack. It is not uncommon for someone to head to see a doctor after their first attack, concerned about their health. Panic attacks can also cause, or be related to, health anxiety.

What Does it Mean to Have Panic Disorder?

If a person has more than one panic attack, or they start to have anxiety as they live in fear of having future panic attacks (even if they do not have one), they may qualify has having “panic disorder.” Once someone has panic disorder, it often requires professional therapy and support in order to control it.

Those with panic disorder may also have additional physical symptoms. That heavy amount of stress can lead to different physical sensations in the long term. In addition, people that often have panic attacks tend to become “hypersensitive” to the feelings they have in their body (because their anxiety causes them to monitor themselves for an upcoming panic attack) so these new sensations cause more anxiety.
