About Grief Counseling
Grief is a profoundly difficult emotion. It’s also one that, in some ways, isn’t a single emotion at all. It’s an emptiness, a sadness, sometimes anger, confusion, and more. It’s powerful. It’s also normal to find grief and loss to be something that lasts longer than you’d like it to, especially because it can be life changing. Grief doesn’t have to be about losing another human being as well. People experience grief over lost careers, lost homes/memories, and more.
Grief counseling, used to treat what’s known clinically as “prolonged grief disorder,” is there for when you need professional support to get you back to feeling more like yourself. It is traditionally for those that have struggled with grief for more than a year (or 6 months for children). But a person does not necessarily have to wait that long to receive treatment, especially if they feel they are truly struggling.
It involves techniques that include, but are not at all limited to:
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
- Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
- Psychodynamic Theory
- Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
- Interpersonal Therapy (IPT)
- Narrative Therapy
Because grief itself is not a single emotion, it doesn’t manifest the same way. Different treatment options offer different types of support for people that all have their own personalities.
When a person has grief, they may feel like a part of them is gone. They may be sensitive to things that trigger reminders of the person. They may experience emotional pain and even anger over the loss. They may have symptoms of depression, or difficulty getting back into normal life. These issues might be temporary, but when they’re not – or they feel as though they are getting worse – an experienced grief therapist on Long Island can help.
