Address Skipping School and School Refusal with Our Experienced Therapists
At Right Path Counseling, many of our therapists work with children and adolescents to help them address mental health issues and school related concerns. On Long Island, one of the issues that affects many students is what’s known as “school refusal” or “school avoidance” – the act of refusing to go to school and attend classes.
Parents: if your child is refusing to go to school, upset about going to school, or acting out about the idea of going to school, reach out to Right Path Counseling today at (516) 247-6457. School Administrators: If you are a school administrator, we are an approved community partner with BOCES for school refusal and other mental health services.
School Refusal and School Avoidance Services
The causes of school refusal on Long Island are complex, but there is a clear problem here on Long Island, and our role as therapists is to help your child – and their parents – through it. Our school avoidance program includes many services that are important for addressing these potentially complicated issues. Our program includes:
- Assessment – Before we can address any issue with school refusal, we have to first determine why it’s occurring. Either in house or through our partnership with District Support Services, we will comprehensively determine the potential causes of refusal – interviewing parents, students, school staff, and caregivers, reviewing records, performing IEPs/evaluations, and more to figure out what is going on with your child.
- Therapy – As soon as we have established cause(s) and a better understanding of your child, they will be connected to a therapist that works directly with school and pediatric mental health related issues. Because time is of the essence, sessions can take place several times a week. School refusal origins can differ, so we may introduce CBT, DBT, EMDR, or other treatment options depending on their age and struggles
- Parent Coaching and Family Therapy – Of course, sometimes what a child needs most is a holistic approach that involves parents and caregivers. When needed, we can offer family therapy classes, parent coaching, and more to help create a cohesive unit that utilizes effective mental health techniques.
- School Consultations – Sometimes, your child’s school has issues that need to be addressed, or may need to be aware of some of the needs that your child has. We can work with teachers and administrators to make sure we’re all on the same page helping your child get back to school.
- Support for Reintegration – Once your child has made progress, they’ll need to go back to school. Rather than have them face that anxiety on their own, our therapists will work on behavioral rehearsal, on-site coaching, and other services – available hourly or full day – to make sure your child feels comfortable and is ready to learn.
- Post-Program Support – As needed, Right Path Counseling will continue to offer coaching, therapy, or other services to help your child stay connected to the school and quickly address and manage any issues that arise along the way.
School refusal is an issue that requires immediate help, because every day a student is not in class is a day they’re missing out on their education, making it harder to reintegrate. Our school avoidance program is ready to start right away and help your child get the support they need.
