Therapist for Childhood Anxiety on Long Island with Right Path Counseling

Right Path Counseling Offers Therapy for Children, Teens, and Young Adults for Anxiety and Related Conditions

Children experience many of the same mental health issues that adults do. For example, many children struggle with issues related to anxiety, such as generalized anxiety and social anxiety. As parents, we often think and assume that our kids will grow out of these conditions.

But many do not.

It’s time to think about childhood anxiety differently. Through therapy, we can provide help for childhood anxiety and give your child more support as they grow and develop. Right Path Counseling is a practice with therapists that specialize in working with children struggling with conditions like anxiety. We are in Jericho, NY on Long Island, and would long a chance to talk about our services and offer support.

Why Consider Therapy for Childhood Anxiety?

For a long time, we had a belief that children would eventually grow out of their mental health struggles; that, even if a child had anxiety now, they would likely overcome that anxiety as they get older. But this mindset is changing. We know a lot more now than we did in the past, and we especially know that:

  • Childhood Anxiety Becomes Adult Anxiety – In adulthood, anxiety may manifest very differently than it does when we’re younger. But it is still anxiety. Children with social anxiety, for example, may still experience the effects of that anxiety as they get older, even if that anxiety doesn’t act the same way.
  • Childhood Experiences Can Form Other Issues – Let’s pretend you could see the future and you were guaranteed your child would grow out of their anxiety. Even in those situations, you would still want to treat it. Why? Because their experiences as children can still affect them as adults. For example, anxiety may make it harder for them to focus in school, leading to academic challenges that affect their lives. Or it can make it harder for them to create social connections, leading to difficulty with friendships as adults. Even without anxiety, the experiences children have now can affect them into the future.
  • Resilience Starts Young – We are finding more and more that our resilience that we create as we’re younger and the skills we use to cope with stress help shape who we become as older adults. Starting younger by teaching our children the skills they need to thrive can be a great way to make sure they develop into psychologically healthy adults.

As parents, our job is to help our children receive what they need to thrive. If your child is showing signs of anxiety, what they may need most is professional support from a therapist that works with children and understands specifically the evidence based ways to address this type of anxiety.

Your child may grow out of it. They may not. Rather than take the risk, therapy can help your child address their mental health needs using productive, effective, skills based therapy. It also ensures that their childhood is more anxiety free, allowing them to focus better in school, make memories, and more.

What Does Childhood Anxiety Look Like?

Just like with adults, childhood anxiety can come in many different forms and look different depending on the child, the type of anxiety, their personality, and more.

For example, some children completely shut down socially, unable to speak to peers, freezing or looking at the ground in social situations. Others may complain about ailments without being sick. Others may express fears often. Some children may show the physical signs of anxiety, like shaking and general nervousness or easily feeling shamed/embarrassed. Still others may find it difficult to leave your side or do anything without you present.

It can also sometimes be difficult to determine if something is anxiety or if it something else. But you can usually tell that a child may be struggling and we, as therapists, can help figure out what that issue may be.
